ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Lead is one of the environmental pollutants that enters the nervous system and leads to neurological disorders such as depression and anxiety. Cinnamon [Cinnamomum verum] has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuro-protective properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cinnamon hydroalcoholic extracts on the level of anxiety and depression in male rats receiving lead acetate

Material and Methods: 32 male Wistar rats were divided into: 1] control 2] cinnamon 3] Lead and 4] lead-cinnamon groups. The 2[nd] and 4[th] groups received 200 mg/kg of cinnamon extracts for 30 consecutive days and at the same period, rats of the 3[rd] and 4[th] groups received 100 mg/kg of lead acetate. At the end of the period we used elevated plus maze test to investigate anxiety, and forced swimming test to assess depression in the rats

Results: In elevated plus maze test, percentages of OAE and OAT significantly decreased in the lead group compared to those in the control group [P<0.01 and P<0.05]. Comparison of the lead-cinnamon group and lead group showed a dramatic increase of these percentages in the lead-cinnamon group [P<0.05]. Forced swimming test showed a significant decrease in immobility time delay [P<0.05] and significant increase in total time of immobility in the lead group [P<0.01]. Cinnamon extract could increase delay in immobility and decrease the duration of immobility in the rats receiving lead [P<0.05]

Conclusion: It is concluded that cinnamon extract has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects on the rats receiving lead acetate

ABSTRACT

Fluctuation in the homeostasis system is one of the main causes of heart attacks. There are contradectry reports regarding the effect of regular exercise, particularly resistance training on hemostasis indeces. This study was done to determine the effect of 8 weeks of resistance training on hemostasis indeces and lipid profile in adult men. In this clinical trail study, 16 adult men were randomly divided into interventional and control groups. Subjects in interventional group participated in a resistance training program including a period 3 days a week for 8 weeks session. Body mass index, level of fibrinogen, protrombin time [PT], partial thromboplastin time [PTT], platelet count, D-dimer fibrinolytic factor, Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL and LDL were measured for each subject. After 8 weeks of resistance training, the level of fibrinogen, PT, PTT and platelets count were significantly reduced and D-dimer fibrinolytic factor increased in interventional group in compared to controls [P<0.05]. Serum level of Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL and LDL had no significant change in interventional group in comparsion with the controls. Resistance training reduces hemostasis indeces in adult men

ABSTRACT

The Detection of neurologic signs for topographical disorders in central nerves system can prevent unnecessary neuroimaging techniques such as MRI. This study was performed to determine the diagnostic value of physical examination for topographic detection of infratentorial lesions in patients with cerebrovascular syndromes. This descriptive study was done on 200 patients with cerebrovascular syndrome in Qaem Hospital in Mashhad, north-east Iran during 2011. Regarding to topographic physical examination, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value and accuracy of signs of syndromes were compared to MRI as gold standard method. The accuracy of tetraparesis and crossed syndromes for localization of brain lesion in brainstem was 79% and 83%, respectively. The accuracy of hemiataxia for localization of brain lesion in ipsilateral cerebellar hemisphere was 98%. The accuracy of Wallenberg syndrome for localization of brain lesion in posterolateral medulla was 98%. Using clinical neuro-examination skills and accurate topographic physical examination can prevent unwanted MRI technique for the diagnoses of cerebrovascular syndromes

ABSTRACT

We carried out a retrospective cross-sectional study on 500 women in Isfahan who started taking combined oral contraceptives [COCs] during the period 21 March 1995-20 March 1997. The cumulative continuation rate fell from 77% to 12% over 60 months. The most common reason for discontinuation was side-effects. There was a significant correlation between side-effects and cumulative COC continuation rate [P < 0.05]. The lowest rate was seen in women reporting nausea or vomiting. Women who are interested in COCs should receive extensive counselling about the possible side-effects and should be helped to find a method of birth control suited to their temperament and physiology

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women throughout the world and for most women mastectomy result in the loss of a body part that is viewed as essential for maintaining feminity, attractiveness and self-esteem. In order to prevent impaired body image, one should accept the changes of her body shape. To determine the effect of counseling on mean of body image score in women undergone mastectomy. In this quasi-experimental designed study, 72 women undergone mastectomy referring to an oncology and radioactive center in Isfahan were randomly selected by convenient sampling and studied. The experimental group [n = 32] participated in 6 sessions of counseling. Data were collected using questionnaire and statistical analysis was performed by the paired and independent t test using spss software. The results indicated a significantly different between mean of body image score before and after counseling in experimental group[P < 0 /001]. Also a significantly different was seen in mean of body image score after counseling in experimental and control group[P < 0 /001]

ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS] is one of the most prevalent endocrine disorders in reproductive age and is also considered as the most popular cause of infertility due to lack of ovary release. On the other hand, present condition of high expenses of infertility treatment and midwifery science slogan as "deliver a healthy infant to a healthy mother" all reflect the necessity to take care of these patients and to check their pregnancy stages precisely. This study aimed to investigate the pregnancy complications among patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. This was an analytic prospective cohort study. The population studied comprised all Iranian nullipars women with pregnancy of one quite healthy fetus. They were divided into two groups including 47 subjects with PCOS and 100 subjects with no PCOS. Pregnancy and delivery complications such as pregnancy sweat, diabetes, eclampsy and early delivery were recorded. The data were collected through interview and analyzed by descriptive inferential statistics through SPSS . The findings of the study showed that the rates of abnormalities in screening tests of diabetes, pregnancy diabetes and eclampsy in pregnant women with PCOS were more than those in controls but there was no significant difference between the two groups in early delivery. Since obesity seems to be the major cause of diabetes and eclampsy in patients with PCOS, these patients need critical care during pregnancy and screen them properly for diabetes and eclampsy
